How does it work with a desk lamp? Do the strips cure with that as well?

It depends 100% on the light source of the lamp. Normal desk lamps or room lights are no problem. The higher the Kelvin number of the lamp, the higher the UV content, but this is definitely not enough for curing.
However, it is not necessary to cover the strips that have been stuck on.
